Sometimes I will build a piece on a speculative basis, but more often than not, clients commission pieces.
The commission process can take some time, but it is not something to be rushed. After speaking with clients, I like to meet them. Often a meeting at their residence is preferable, as it gives me a feel for their taste, and is particularly important if the piece is being created for a specific place.
At this preliminary meeting, subjects such as general preferences in woods, shape, design and finishes are discussed, as well as rough estimate of the budget.
If the client wants to proceed with formal design work, a second meeting is arranged, usually within a month, at which time I present some preliminary sketches. If I feel especially confident about a design, or if it is hard to sketch because of compound curves, I may build a simple model of the piece, or of one of its elements, such as a leg. This formal design process entails a fee of $250.00; if the piece is commissioned, this fee is deducted from the final price.
If the client wishes to proceed, I offer them a formal quotation and accept a down payment of 50%. Actual completion of a piece can take some time, as my usual practice is to complete pieces in the order in which they have been commissioned. It is important that it be understood that this time is necessary for this type of creative work; haste could seriously compromise the integrity of the piece.
